Women’s Treatment Centre
- There have been efforts to bring a residential addiction program for females to Renfrew County for the last 30 years.
- Various groups at various times have tackled the issue with no success, due to a lack of appetite on the part of the Ministry to provide annualized funding.
- A few years ago at a community forum to address gaps in health care for Renfrew County, the lack of residential addiction support for women again was raised.
- A working group was formed, and met over a 2 year period. This group consisted of addiction programs, Community Mental Health, Family and Children's Services, United Way, Bernadette McCann House, Colombus House and others.
- We were able to locate a possible site, contacted Infrastructure Ontario, and were approved to apply for funding on the understanding we could secure program funding from the Ministry.
- We could not obtain a letter of intent to fund, so we were stopped in our tracks yet again!
- Last year, another property was brought to our attention in Pembroke, so we once again initiated interest in Residential facilities for women in Renfrew County.
- This time we are trying a different approach: we have been circulating a petition to have the tax-payers of Renfrew County demand that the ministry fund this program. Our MPP John Yakabuski is behind us 100%.
- We have developed a post card to be mailed out to every address in the county that Canada post delivers to. The response so far has been very good. We now have over 6,000 signatures.
- We are preparing our application and seeking letters of support as well has financial contributions.
- We hope to have our programs operational by 2020!
